It took me an embarrassingly long time to realise that people enthusing about The Pitt (medical drama?) were not actually talking about Pit Babe (omegaverse race car drivers?) despite my brain apparently hastily storing both in the same mental bucket.

I haven't seen either (yet) (probably) (I'm not watching much TV beyond anime these days years), but very happy to see everyone having fun :D

Can a crossover be contemplated? XD

Weekly Chat

The weekly chat posts are intended for just that, chatting among each other. What are you currently watching? Reading? What actor/idol are you currently following? What are you looking forward to? Are you busy writing, creating art? Or did you have no time at all for anything, and are bemoaning that fact?

Whatever it is, talk to us about it here. Tell us what you liked or didn't like, and if you want to talk about spoilery things, please hide them under either of these codes:

Get Your Words Out pledging is open for 2026! I am well on track to not meet my pledge again this year (lol), but I'm planning to sign up with the same pledge again, and as a volunteer again too! The GYWO challenge style works well for me (even if I haven't managed to meet my goal even once yet) and I love the advice, essays, and support from the community. There are lots of challenges and prompts, etc, shared throughout the year too for those who enjoy!

Probably see a few of you there, again or for the first time :D

If you're curious but unsure, feel free to ask. Happy to answer to the best of my knowledge (and enthusiasm XD)

There's a Cozy Fantasy Book Blast happening, and I picked up Good Neighbours by Stephanie Burgis, and Tsumiko and the Enslaved Fox by Forthright. Speaking of cozy, I had a conversation on the FaRo discord about project-hopping, because while I know I'll return to angsty paranormal romance in future projects and am committed to writing Book Two of Bloodhunt Academy right now, I need to have a cozy fantasy writing project ongoing alongside. The cozy dragon romantasy is what I'm eyeing right now. While they're two different vibes, I'm going to keep them on the same pen name (I looked at my collection of book ideas and realised I'm not a writer who can come up with similar things for long in the first place).

Theme from “The Singing Killer” (1970), by Roman Tam (as half-heartedly lip-synced by David Chiang.)

Lyrics, as translated in the subtitles:

SCREAMING FANS: Bravo, Johnny!)

JOHNNY: I’m the singing killer
The singing killer is none other than me
When it comes to fighting and daring acts
Don’t belittle me
I’m the singing killer
Fist is a fist
Knife is a knife
Kung fu, judo, and karate
I specialise in all
If you dare,
Come and try me

The singing killer is me
I’m the singing killer
I dare to love, dare to hate
And most daring of acts
Don’t belittle me
I’m the singing killer
Pretty girls are pretty girls
Gold is gold
Girls and gold, though they’re fine
These in no way can compromise my heroism
If you dare,
Come and try

SCREAMING FANS: Johnny!

[#283 | First Impressions] Challenge Post

Challenge 283:
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Whether it’s a job interview, your first day at a new school, or an audience with royalty, first impressions can be important. But they aren’t always easy! Sometimes everything works out, and it’s love (or job offer) at first sight; other times, you trip on a shoelace you could have sworn wasn’t untied five minutes ago, or stub your toe and say a word you shouldn’t say in front of your boss’s boss’s boss, or a supervolcano erupts and you have to immediately cut the interview short to go suit up and save the world.

What kind of first impressions do your characters make? Good ones? Bad ones? Memorable ones, for all the right or wrong reasons?

Write a story about first impressions.

BONUS GOAL: All Suited Up

If your submission features someone in a suit, it will earn an extra point to be tallied in voting!

Challenge ends Monday, December 15 at 9:00PM EST.
• Post submissions as new entries using the template in the profile
• Tag this week's entries as: [#] submission, 283 – first impressions
• If you have questions about this challenge, please ask them here

Liu Yu's live performance of "The Witty Gallant's Playful Matchmaking"

I recently watched this gorgeous C-pop performance.

He's so charmingly expressive. Someone in the comments said 'elegance of a noble with the playfulness of a youth' and that's absolute BARS.

Topic Tuesday - Your Highlight(s) of the Year

Welcome to Topic Tuesday! Right away I want to stress that discussion posts are always welcome to the community, you don't have to wait until a Topic Tuesday rolls around, and then maybe be disappointed by the current topic of discussion. Whenever you want to talk about something, please simply make a separate entry to this comm, no matter the week, the time, or the topic. All right? *g*

Today's topic is Your Highlight(s) of the Year. 2025 is almost over, so let's take a moment to look back. What were your highlights of the year? Which drama/movie/novel was your favourite, or made the year memorable for you? Did you fall in love with a new actor or singer? Or find a new song/piece of music that seems stuck in your head on an endless loop? Go into detail as much or as little as you like, and leave links if you want.

As usual, if you want to talk about spoilers, please use one of these codes to hide them.

[#282 | Catharsis] Voting Post

Here are the entries for this challenge:

List of entries )

Please Note: Because we only have 3 entries this week, there is only a First Place and Runner Up to vote for!

In order to vote, please reply to this post using the form provided. All comments are screened, and entries are listed in the order they were submitted. For your vote to qualify, you must fill out your entire voting card (both spots) in order to be counted. Winner votes are worth 2 points, Runner Up votes are worth 1 point. Meeting the bonus goal on an entry gets an extra point for that submission.

When voting, please copy/paste the ENTRY NUMBER and the FIC TITLE from the list above into the spot you're voting for (this prevents accidentally mis-numbering a vote and casting it for the wrong entry). It should look like this:

First Place: 61. Fic Title Here
Runner Up: 88. Another Fic Title

Please note that you cannot vote for your own entry, and that votes cannot be made anonymously. You do not have to be a member of the community in order to vote, nor have submitted an entry for this week; everyone is welcome to participate in the voting. IP addresses are logged to prevent duplicate voting.

Voting closes Wednesday, December 10 at 9:00PM EST.

Reminder to self: Anchor! Visualise!

Dear self, I know you forget every time, so here's reminder #134792. I think there are a few of these reminders as posts on this journal already, too.

1. Your first drafts are pretty bare, and that's okay! Don't sweat it. Conversations and actions in a void, just roll with it. Blank room syndrome, let's go.
2. Of course it seems flat when you reread. The solution isn't to add unnecessary action or vague plot, at least not as a first port of call.
3. Start with ANCHORING the scene! Visualise it! Where are the characters? What are they wearing and doing while speaking or doing the stuff that needs getting done? Can you add any sensory descriptions beyond visual descriptions? What scents surround them? What time is it?
4. As you are rediscovering today for the 358935893th time, this already helps a lot with making scenes more vivid and flow better.

For the cursed witch, during early revisions I literally wrote "ANCHOR!" at the start of every chapter I was annotating so I'd actually remember to do that when making the changes afterwards.

But I forgot again, and was being all sad at the flat fic first draft I pulled out this morning. Now I have ANCHORED and VISUALISED the first scene, and I'm a bit less sad :D And also, having fun. Whee! \o/
